There were many, but which one is your favourite? Who is the superior mother in SoapLand, and why?

This is about a character who, in her role as the mother, influenced the story.

To avoid a hundred baby-plotlines, think of the mother's initiative, her drive.
Hoping that the baby won't die isn't a "drive", because in this case it's the baby (or the baby's fate) that places her in the mother role.
Whatever it is that happens (or happened), it has to be her doing, but the reasons are unlimited of course.

    Do you have 5 favourites?

p.s. stepmothers, fake mothers and dreamed-up mothers are allowed too.

    Hmm...

Do I go with loving (but overbearing) mothers like Karen Fairgate ?
Do I go with the controlling mothers like Angela Channing, Abby Cunningham & Alexis ?
Do I go with psycho mothers like Julia Cumson ?
Do I go with strong headed mothers like Miss Ellie & Maggie Gioberti ?

    Decisions, decisions

I'm going to lean towards the absent, unfit or downright tyrannical for my list of mothers.

    1. Angela Channing (FC)
    2. Alexis Colby (Dynasty)
    3. Rebecca Wentworth (Dallas)
    4. Lilimae Clements (KL)
    5. Jaqueline Perault (FC)

I've gone for the five most interesting characters whose role on their respective show was defined by the fact that they were somebody's mother:

    1. Lilimae Clements
    2. Judith Ryland
    3. Ruth Galveston
    4. Sylvia Lean
    5. Jacqueline Perrault

    1. Sable Colby
    upload_2017-6-13_13-36-30.png
The most machiavellian of the bunch. Her devotion to her son Miles borders on obsession, although it's not entirely without ulterior motive(s).

    2. Jacqueline Perrault
    upload_2017-6-13_13-41-38.png
The most influential mother, although that mostly applies to the show's back story. But as a result, her illegitimate son turns into a vengeful villain, and the half-brothers become enemies.

    3. Claudia Blaisdel
    upload_2017-6-13_13-54-49.png
The most melancholic mother. Her mental disability prevents her from being the mother Lindsay needs, which creates some wonderfully tense drama.

    4. Angela Channing
    upload_2017-6-13_14-3-57.png
The most dominating mother, as she doesn't allow her children to make their own choices. Manipulation, lies and emotional abuse - she will stop at nothing to keep them where they belong.

    5. Julia Blake
    upload_2017-6-13_14-16-0.png
The most opportunistic mother who, under the pretence of "mother knows best", uses her daughter as a golden goose. And to keep it that way, she has to undermine the competition.

Poor Val. Her desire to move past her first enforced maternal deprivation - J.R.'s original sin - became Val's driving force, all but consuming her. There was a whole lot of wonderfully oestrogeny subtext whenever she encountered young women and tried to meet her maternal needs: from Annie and Olivia to the three sisters who represented everything she thought she could never have. It's all the more tragic because she felt she was repeating the sins of her own mother...

    2. Lilimae Clements

So much history. Mirroring Val's Dallas debut, our introduction to Lilimae was as the long-absent mother who had abandoned her daughter under very different - albeit irrevocably connected - circumstances. And that was just the tip of the iceberg.

    3. Patricia Shepard

"I know I can trust you to remember all the things I've taught you..."

    4. Ruth Galveston

Another absent mother. She scores for being unapologetic and even slightly bored of the very idea.

    5. Sable Colby

For the reasons given by Willie. God help the person who comes between this tigress and her cub.

    1. Lilimae Clements, KL. Keepin' it real, as they say. Nobody does questionable, home-spun advice quite like her. Granted, that whole "shouting her son off a rooftop" thing can be filed under that classic Southern-ism, "He needed killin'."

    2. Laura Avery, KL. As she found out she was dying, her main concern was not over-emoting and crying into a tissue, but making sure her children were going to be taken care of. She reunited her sons with their (hopefully) reformed father, and went on that heartbreaking "shopping trip" with Karen to buy Meg all the clothes she'd need for all those events Laura would not be around to see.

    3. Patricia Williams, KL. She went into witness protection to protect her and her family from being killed, enduring the loss of her career. Just when it seemed she was safe, she got mowed down by a nutcase neighbor.

    4. Maggie Gioberti, FC. How often do grandmothers get to give birth? Points for determination.

    5. Sable Colby, Colbys. She could give Karen MacKenzie a few pointers in sMothering.

I'll go with a mix of good/bad moms, but the 2 first positions have to go to moms that I could like to have myself! :)

    1. Miss Ellie Ewing
    2. Valene Ewing
    3. Karen Fairgate

    1. Sable Colby - I hate to admit it but she has the edge over Alexis.
    2. Alexis Carrington Colby - The mother who shaped her children by not being there in their formative years.
    3. Abby Ewing - The fulltime working mother who had to come home and deal with her teenage daughter's drug comedowns and put an axe through the bathroom door after a hard day of doing dubious business deals.
    4. Val Ewing - Soap's only real and true empty armed Madonna. At least for a while.
    5. Ellie Ewing - The long suffering tortured soul of Southfork.

Interesting choice. Yes, it was a big part of the story, and those mother-daughter scenes made Constance look like an unpleasant person.

Oh, Jeez, give me Sable's smothering any day over Karen MacKenzie's. Even in their middleclass home, the furniture replacement bills and the Klonopin prescriptions would break you -- financially and otherwise.

Oh my. If we're including British matriarchs my list would be very different. Brit soaps are an embarrassment of riches when it comes to Mums.

Didn't you just love that twist when Lute-Mae turned out to be Constance's biological mother?
