To say that my viewing of Dallas was piecemeal after VP left the show during its original and syndicated run is an understatement, but one thing I did agree with JR about was his anger when Miss Ellie made Clayton half ownership of Southfork.

    Not cool.

I also understood JR's anger at that. JR disliked Clayton (and for good reasons) but to make this outside half owner of the ranch was dumb. Clayton had his own ranch after all.

Now, I had forgotten at the time but I can see Ellie never giving JR Southfork after he mortaged the ranch a couple of years ago and giving it to either Gary and/or Bobby.

I got why JR was pissed but I didn't agree with him. Whether Jock's money saved it or not I still thought of the Ranch as Miss Ellie's because it was her heritage, so she should've been able to do whatever she wanted with it.
Now if she'd tried to bring him into Ewing Oil, THAT would have been uncool.

I find myself agreeing with J.R. a lot of times during Dallas history, although I also disagree with him a lot too. During the Battle for Ewing Oil, I was nearly always on his side against Bobby. J.R. also cuts through all the crap and propaganda and gets right to the heart of issues, which I like.

I never understood JR's mind-set with regards to Southfork. Was it because he was first born it was therefore his? I understood his passion for Ewing Oil as Jock had been priming JR (I'm guessing since he was a young man) to one day have the company, that was until Pam began to play mind games with Bobby. And lets not forget JR nearly lost Southfork in a deal gone wrong.
But, for Miss Ellie to allow Clayton a share in Southfork was wrong and a greater man would have said thanks, but no thanks.

I thought JR got screwed at the end also when Bobby got the ranch and Clayton gave him those voting proxies for Westar only to have the saddletramp Dusty Farlow to come in and claim them, does anyone remember that?

Yes. In J.R.'s mind, Southfork is symbolic of the Ewing family and its heritage, despite his personal lack of interest in the ranching side of his family's heritage. J.R. isn't sentimental often, but Southfork is one of the few exceptions.

J.R. was very uneasy about mortgaging Southfork when asked to. But then, with his winning attitude and gamblers' attitude, just went ahead and didn't contemplate the possibility of losing any longer. J.R. later took a sadistic pleasure in Vaughn Leland's suffering after the Asian oil wells were nationalized, because Vaughn had nearly cost him Southfork.

Yet Vaughn came back for more when both JR and he set Cliff up. God the series was good then and they couldn't have picked a better actor than Dennis Patrick for the role
He had the most brilliant mannerisms when portraying Vaughn, a great gift. I sometimes think we forget what some of those guest/co stars brought to Dallas.

If I remember right, yes he had sold it.

Yeah JR was understandably upset about Clayton getting half of Southfork. Although to my mind JR was always more concerned about Ewing Oil. Ewing Oil was his first love, not Sue Ellen, not John Ross, that company was more precious to him than anything.

To my mind the only reason that upset him was that Clayton was somehow taking Jocks place as the half owner of the ranch & that's why it really got to him.

Yeah, it maybe irked him to have an outsider having claim to a Ewing asset but there wasn't much he could do about it, Clayton was Miss Ellie's husband & it was her decision.

Made good drama though didn't it!?! That's why Dallas was such a successful show. We just loved watching the Ewing's fight amongst each other, is it any wonder that I love Dallas. :)

In some ways, JR was ready to sacrifice Southfork to SAVE Southfork....
