All right, the Cumson grandson was not on DYNASTY, but there were quite a few actors who appeared in more than one prime time soap.

I want to know which role was your favourite.
For example, if you like Paige Matheson more than Taryn Blake (both roles played by Nicolette Sheridan) then your vote goes to KNOTS LANDING. And if you prefer Taryn Blake then the vote goes to PAPER DOLLS.

***Spin-off crossovers are excluded from this battle because they play the same character***
***only one vote per actor, even if they appeared in all prime time soaps***

Which soap got the best shape?

1 - Morgan Fairchild (Dallas, Flamingo Road, Paper Dolls, Falcon Crest) as Racine in Paper Dolls: she was all too briefly in Dallas, she smouldered on FR and she played complex on FC. However, Racine always stood out as the centrepiece in the rather overcrowded cast on PD. She was catty, she was fun, she had a hot tub in her bedroom and she was so well known, nobody cared to use her surname, like Madonna or Cher.

2- Howard Duff (Dallas, Knots Landing, Flamingo Road) as Titus in Flamingo Road: Paul Galveston appeared in my favourite season of Knots and of course facilitated the entrance of the great Ava Gardner. However Titus is a much more memorable character in my mind. He appeared larger than life in his white suit with his tyrannical approach to ruling over the denizens of Truro.

3 - David Selby (Flamingo Road, Falcon Crest) as Richard in Falcon Crest: there's no doubt that Michael Tyrone was an interesting character but Richard is part of a long line of those excellent "cat among the pigeons" characters that joined a show when it was established and came to be one of it's headline acts (see also Alexis, Abby & Greg on KL, Amanda on Melrose).

4 - Michael Nader (Bare Essence, Dynasty) as Dex in Dynasty: I still haven't got to see Bare Essence but he burned up the screen as Alexis' stud horse on Dynasty, so Dex gets my defacto vote

5- Lauren Hutton (Paper Dolls, Falcon Crest) as Colette in Paper Dolls: I don't recall much about her stint on FC (were there ninjas involved?) but on PD, Lauren was the sophisticated late addition with her husky voice, European ways and lusty intentions towards Grant Harper. Like the show itself, her stint was all too brief.

    1. Karen Carlson (The Yellow Rose, Dallas) as Marlene Champion in THE YELLOW ROSE
    upload_2019-1-1_2-52-0.png
Both "Marlene" and "Nancy Scottfield" were limited yet very signifcant roles, but the absent-mother-stirring-up-drama is one of my favourite soap tropes.
Add to that a ferociously smashing-the-mirror-to-smithereens-scene (my favourite scene in any genre) and my #1 is a no-brainer.

    2. Tom Schanley (The Yellow Rose, Dynasty) as Whit Champion in THE YELLOW ROSE
    upload_2019-1-1_3-12-37.png
I liked his role in DYNASTY (Josh Harris) and I think they could have done so much more with him, but he got better drama as the only man-boy amongst cowboys.
Mother issues, daddy issues, uncle issues, older ladies issues - sweet little Whit just had to deal with it.

    3. James Houghton (Knots Landing, The Colbys) as Cash Cassidy in THE COLBYS
    upload_2019-1-1_3-25-35.png
It's true that the Wards from the cul-de-sac weren't given the meatiest storylines (although it got more interesting just before they left) but I've always appreciated them.
Nevertheless, his role of the sleazy and ambitious Senator Cassidy was better soap material.

    4. Morgan Fairchild (Dallas, FR, PD, FC) as Constance Carlyle in FLAMINGO ROAD
    upload_2019-1-1_3-42-21.png
I totally agree with @Carrie Fairchild that PAPER DOLLS was the best show for Morgan Fairchild. I don't know how to translate it but I'd say she seemed like "a fish in the water".
Consciously provocative, humorously bitchy and unapologetically ambitious - it's almost as if she played herself (not a fact, because I don't know the person Morgan Fairchild).
I found her Flamingo Road character a bit more interesting although I wouldn't say that MF was the ultimate choice for this role.
But that's all hypothetical talk because she did play the role of the spoilt and snooty Weldon heiress, and I think she did it very well.

    5. Dack Rambo (Paper Dolls, Dallas) as Wesley Harper in PAPER DOLLS
    upload_2019-1-1_4-8-17.png
Very watchable on DALLAS, but apart from the Marinos storyline I hardly remember any of his Dallas troubles so I'll take that as an indication.
His role of the scheming dandy Wesley is more to the point and complements his perfect coiffure.

    Ooh, this one is difficult!

I guess it might be worth pointing out that while Lorenzo Lamas was not on Dynasty (which is a shame since Alexis would have eaten him up with a spoon), he was on a short-lived nighttime soap called The Secrets of Midland Heights prior to FC.

And yes, this is my not-so-subtle means of stalling while I try to compile a list...

And Bradford Dillman, another FC star, played the lead character in the TSOMH spin-off "King's Crossing".

Please note: these two 80s prime time soaps are also eligible.
After all, BERRENGER'S was only 12 episodes and THE HAMPTONS only 4 or 5 episodes.

    My choices:

1- John Beck (Mark Graison on "Dallas"). He came directly from "Flamingo Road" and those who hate hair and pornstaches don´t appreciate his sexiness and talent as the Clark Gable of the 80´s.

Register or to view Spoiler content!

    "Good morning...!"
2- Morgan Fairchild (Jordan J. Roberts on "Falcon Crest"), she also had starred in "FR" and "Paper Dolls" and became the biggest sprayed walking hairdo in that decade...and was sorely missed as Jenna when Prissy Presley showed up!

3- Laura Johnson (Terry Hartford on "Falcon Crest"), also guest-starred on "Dallas" as Alan Beam´s girlfriend when he was dating the Poisoned Dwarf, I mean Lucy. She was a blast on FC as the very slutty Terry! Regrettably, the earthquake blasted her (karma is a b¡tch!).

4- David Selby (Richard Channing on "FC"), just like John Beck, he just switched sets when he went on to play a character not too different from his Michael Tyrone. Great actor who deserved much better storylines in the latter seasons (though all his co-stars had even worse plots!).

5- Mel Ferrer (Phillip Erickson on "FC"). Also had a small role on "Dallas" as Pam´s boss at the originally named store known as "The Store". He nailed it as Angela´s lawyer and husband on FC, though they were stupid enough to kill him off too soon...

    I had no idea!
I prefer Richard's background story but Michael was so deliciously sinister, I find it impossible to choose.

    1. Laurence Haddon
Franklin Horner (Dallas) / Mitch Ackerman (Knots Landing)
The Ewings’ banker had a gravitas that made him a match for the big guns there. But he had far meatier role on Knots Landing where he got to steal Valene’s newborn babies and get them black marketed (if that is indeed a verb). Throw in a poker addiction and a ton of debts and it gets richer and richer. He had one of soap’s great exit scenes, even if he ruined that pristine beige upholstery doing it.

    as
    Dr Mitch Ackerman
    KNOTS LANDING

    2. David Ackroyd
Gary Ewing (Dallas) / Bill Medford (Knots Landing) / Det. Lt. Fred Merrill (Dynasty)
As well as the three biggies David was all over any number of sudsy dramas of the era: Cagney & Lacey, Peaceable Kingdom, St. Elsewhere, Hotel

Well, for starters, I recall being surprised by his Dynasty appearances last time I watched and enjoying him on it. But now I couldn’t tell you what his character did or said, so let’s rule that one out for starters.

Knots scores big here for having the former Gary Ewing dating the current Gary Ewing’s neighbour, which gives us an idea of what Knots may have looked like if Ackroyd had been available. He has dinner with the Fairgates and has a one-to-one conversation with Abby in which she trashes Karen.

He also helps Karen through her grief with one of my favourite Knots scenes in which she walks out of their encounter group during a woman’s graphic description of picking up her husband’s ashes, only to burst into laughter at the idea of “Bert in a Dixie cup”.

Most tantalising of all - Ackroyd has a scene outside the Ewing house with just Joan Van Ark and Julie Harris where he looks very much at home doing some repairs while Lilimae serves him chamomile tea. Each time I watch that scene, he’s just Gary to me. It’s oddly satisfying and disappointing at the same time.

Ackroyd’s Knots appearance culminates in a mind boggling scene in which the two Gary Ewings sit round with the cast and watch their once and current mother-in-law singing a song about The Old Pine Country.* The very idea is almost too bizarre for drunken fanfic.

All the same, the pitch perfect arc of his two-part introduction on Dallas where he introduced the character that made it all possible can’t be underestimated. His immediate chemistry with the cast, the juicy backstory and the drama that played out are right up there. It’s like he’s part of the very Genesis of Eighties soap.

It’s interesting that Ackroyd’s characters on both shows seemed very uncomfortable in their environments and even their own skin. Somehow it seems to work better on Dallas. Or at least I found his discomfiture more engaging there.

This is a tough call. I started writing feeling certain that this would be an easy win for Dallas and somehow have talked myself into voting Knots. Almost!

Turns out it’s not an easy win for Dallas, but it’s a win all the same.

    as
    Gary Ewing
    DALLAS

    • I’ve only just realised that the song’s opening lyric “The prettiest thing I ever did see” closely echoes Val’s parting line to Ackroyd’s Gary at the end of their Dallas two-parter: “You was the prettiest thing I ever saw. You still are”. Surely this can’t be coincidence.

    3. Brian Dennehy
Luther Frick (Dallas) / James Cargill (Knots Landing) / Jake Dunham (Dynasty)
Now this is a close run thing. And such choice: the intense embodiment of brutal retribution in Winds Of Vengeance; the intense embodiment of Richard’s false hope on Knots. The intense embodiment of Blake’s downfall and Alexis’s arrival on Dynasty.

I love a Richard-centric episode of Knots as much as the next man. And who doesn’t adore an angry gun-wielding redneck threatening to have his way with every female in the cast?

All the same it feels like Dynasty truly gave Dennehy dialogue as big as his stature. And he certainly chewed up and spat out some of Dynasty’s most iconic lines, bellowing and monologuing as though his life depended on it. It didn’t hurt that he was also magnetic in the small moments where he was just Matthew’s old friend.

    as
    Jake Dunham
    DYNASTY

    4. Howard Duff
Paul Galveston (Knots Landing) / Sen. Henry O’Dell (Dallas)
As I haven’t yet had the pleasure of Flamingo Road, this is a nice, easy win for one of Knots’s most magnificent beasts, who was perhaps as close to the stuff of legend the series ever got. Like Jock on Dallas, the legend only grew after his death. His deathbed marriage to Ava Gardner; his will changing the lives of some of the main players; his spurned son’s lengthy soliloquy to his portrait and the pages of his notebook holding the key to Knots’s biggest ever plot. Galveston even returned as a ghostly vision in the later years where his legend was still being enhanced.

    as
    Paul Galveston
    KNOTS LANDING

    5. Dale Robertson
Walter Lankershim (Dynasty) / Frank Crutcher (Dallas)
But for the timing being too close to Jock’s death, I think Frank Crutcher would have made a great partner for Ellie. I found him likeable enough, with a bit of old school edge that could have made for some interesting dynamics on Southfork.

Walter had similar qualities and benefitted from being on Dynasty when its writing was at its richest. Even being in so few episodes, Walter felt complex and his motives sometimes ambiguous. What other character could get away with sharing his childhood memories while simultaneously playing piano in a bordello where he’s trying conversion therapy on his gay employee.

As a symbol of Dynasty’s raw and powerful first season, my favoured Dale is...

    as
    Walter Lankershim
    DYNASTY

    1. David Selby who was Richard Channing in Falcon Crest and Michael Tyron in Flamingo Road. Two great characters but I found Richard to be the more complex and compelling. FALCON CREST

    2. Morgan Fairchild. What soap wasn't she in? I remember her most from being Constance Carlyle in Flamingo Road, Jordan Roberts in Falcon Crest and Jenna Wade in Dallas. By far she was best in Flamingo Road and was the outstanding character in that series. FLAMINGO ROAD

    3. Howard Duff who was Titus Semple in Flamingo Road, Paul Galveston in Knots Landing and Senator O'Dell in Dallas. He had smaller but important roles in 2 of those soaps but his standout role has to be in as Titus in FLAMINGO ROAD

    4. Don Starr who played Jordan Lee in Dallas and the judge who oversaw the trial of Sid Fairgate when he was accused of sexual assault in Knot Landing. Jordan Lee was one of my favourite Dallas supporting Dallas characters so he wins. DALLAS

    5. Laurence Haddon who was Franklin Horner in Dallas and Dr Mitch Ackerman in Knots Landing. For his deviousness in stealing Val's babies and his total lack of remorse over it makes me choose Dr Ackerman as my favourite role of his. KNOTS LANDING

    Oh gosh. Thank you.

Funnily enough before posting it I had a quick peek at your Versus entry for that Knots episode. Just to make sure I wasn't plagiarising an observation you'd already made.

    1) David Selby (FALCON CREST and FLAMINGO ROAD): In each of these shows David played a villainous character. However it was the wine orientated show, which provided more success for him. This is the reason for my choice in choosing his part as Tricky Dicky Channing - FALCON CREST.

    2) Morgan Fairchild (DALLAS, FALCON CREST, FLAMINGO ROAD and PAPER DOLLS): I'm slightly biased here as I don't have substantial memories of FR and PD, so to have a large chunk of season 5 FC devoted to her schizophrenic character Jordan / Monica sways my decision - FALCON CREST.

    3) Lee Bergere (DYNASTY and FALCON CREST): He joined the cast of FC towards the end of the run; appearing in just a handful of episodes. Lee's role in the Colorado show was major in comparison, as the butler / chauffeur to the Carringtons and father to Kirby and Sean - DYNASTY.

    4) John Beck (DALLAS and FLAMINGO ROAD): I wasn't really a FR fan so I have better recollections of John's role in the Texas oil saga. Therefore his portrayal of debonair Mark Graison tips the scale, in this 'soapshifter' battle - DALLAS.

    5) Joseph Campanella (DALLAS and THE COLBYS): IMHO his character Hutch Corrigan; Connie's love interest in THE COLBYS was more memorable than his stint during DALLAS, as Joseph Lombardi Senior. He even appeared in the opening credits of DYNASTY's spinoff - THE COLBYS.

Richard is waiting for his new lawyer to arrive. A very glamorous woman is waiting outside the front of his new mansion, (a scene from season 5, 1985 - '86):

    Jordan: "Hello Mr. Channing!"

Richard: "Who are you? I was expecting J.J. Roberts."

Jordan: "I am J.J. Roberts. Jordan Jennifer Roberts. My father didn't want to work for you."

    1. David Selby
    FalconCrestRichard.JPG

Ok, so I admit I've never watched Flamingo Road (not sure why, it's definitely on my list) so my top two are solely based on the roles I know them in. But how could I not vote for my namesake Richard Channing? He was smooth and ruthless but also had a great sense of humour and a lot of charm. His past was wonderfully dark, in fact, he may have had one of the most sinister backstories in all of Soapland, and he was a character that really shook things up upon his arrival. So my vote goes to David in Falcon Crest.

    2. John Beck
    john-beck-actor-2dad8bf9-2d2d-40b9-980a-00ac1885e6b-resize-750.jpeg

I have no idea what role he played on Flamingo Road but he charmed the pants off me on Dallas. Sweet and sexy and filthy rich, I don't know how Pam resisted him as long as she did. A wonderful character who had a beautifully bittersweet ending (not including the dream season). Dallas

    3. Laura Johnson
    Terry.JPG

On my last rewatch of Dallas I remember being pleasantly surprised to see Laura as Alan Beam's girlfriend. But it wasn't a very substantial part. Her role as Terry was a much meatier one and one that she really sunk her teeth into. As far as scheming bitch sisters go she's up there with the best of them. Falcon Crest.

    4. Albert Salmi
    critique-dallas-episode-112-fringe-benefits-2.jpg

He played very unsavoury, sinister characters on Knots Landing and on Dallas. On Knots Landing he played Joshua's father, the minister who Lillimae had a brief dalliance with, and then left him to raise their son and subject him to years of abuse. On Dallas he played Gil Thurman, a real sleaze who JR tried to pimp out Sue Ellen to in order to close a deal for his refinery and who Afton did sleep with to make sure Cliff was the one who got it. It's a close call but I think the character of Gil Thurman made my skin crawl all the more and for that reason I'll vote for Albert on Dallas.

An interesting, not so fun fact, he suffered from clinical depression and died in 1990 after he shot and killed his wife, then turned the gun on himself.

    5. Laurence Haddon
    laurence-haddon-043162c2-a4ce-4962-a3c4-f18f73626cb-resize-750.jpeg

Although he was enjoyable as Franklin Horner on Dallas, he had a lot more to work with as the evil Dr. Ackerman on Dallas and he was great in the role. Unscrupulous, duplicitous and apparently devoid of human emotion, Dr. Ackerman was a wonderfully dark villain and his character went out with a bang. So I vote for Laurence on Knots Landing.

John Beck played Sam Curtis in Flamingo Road and the character was almost identical to Mark Graison in Dallas.

Sam was a rich playboy type who was charming, loyal, reliable, caring and loving, in much the same way that Mark Graison was. Both could also be "action men" when required and could look after themselves in a fight. In business both were tough but fair. In fact, I can't think of a single scene that Mark Graison featured in which he behaved in a way that would have been out of character for Sam Curtis.

Michael Tyrone is like a Stephen King character. An evil force that returns to Castle Rock to destroy everything and everyone.

I assume you mean Morgan Fairchild's (Jenna Wade 1) character Constance Carlyle. I don't recall Sam and her ever getting together.

Constance slept with Michael Tyrone and Julio (the guy who generally only wore very short and tight shorts and little else) but she never had sex with Sam.

I only watched FR once, but I remember that Constance did set her sight on Sam and tried to bed him at least once. Maybe it´s my memory fixated on an image from the preview of that episode with those two almost kissing...I can´t know for sure...

Edit to add: Thanks @Willie Oleson for confirming this for me, you keep me going back to you again and again...

    Did she really? The slut!

Was that before or after she married Fielding? It's been a long time since I watched the series and some of the details have clearly slipped my mind.
