2. Sue Ellen
Lord, these rounds are getting tough but here goes.
Match 1 - Angela Channing: while I've a greater affinity with Knots, my vote for this one has to go to FC. Julie Harris was outstanding as Lilimae. She delivered powerhouse performances and as the only "senior" character on the show, fitted in seamlessly alongside her younger cast members. However, while Knots could've (and did) get on fine without the presence of Lilimae, Angela Channing was Falcon Crest. Without her there would've been no show. Also, props to Jane Wyman for being a woman in her 60's headlining a primetime network soap at that time.
Match 2 - Sable Colby: Sable and Sue Ellen are two of my favourite 80's soap characters, so this one was rather tough. Sue Ellen was great value for money in terms of the drama she provided. The shootings, the drunkenness, the affairs, the car crashes, more drunkenness, more shootings. However Sable wins out on the power of Stephanie Beacham's performance. She was such a class act who devoured all those fortunate enough to share the screen with her.
I like this post so much. I agree with your comments about Angela being a vital part of Falcon Crest but your observation about Jane Wyman being the star is what I'd like to copmment on further.
Falcon Crest was first screened in an era when prime time dramas with a female lead were unusual and one with an elderly female lead was quite rare (Murder She Wrote and The Golden Girls spring to mind but they came later). The 80s was the era of the yuppies and so many things were youth orientated so it could be considered brave to have a aging female lead for Falcon Crest. The combination of the excellent writing and Jane Wyman's performance made it a success. Had it failed, I could imagine the chatter amongst TV executives who would probably have concluded that no one wanted to watch a show lead by a veteran actress.
Yes I think Falcon Crest was the only soap that covered the three generations in a satisfactory manner.
Dallas had its third generation character in Lucy, but apparently they struggled to include her in the overall narrative.
Dynasty and Knots didn't have any third generation adults at all, unless you'd consider Tom Carrington and Ruth Sumner first generation (but these were guest appearances) and of course there was Lilimae, but without her granddaughter.
It's kinda funny that Eric and Sofia were Peter's children instead of his grandchildren - or did he marry twice, and was Skylar Eric's half-sister?
Lilimae was definitely the third generation adult on Knots Landing. Lucy might have been missing on that show but once Bobby and Betsy came along Lilimae got to be the grandmother to them.
Also I think the original Dallas did cover three generations in a satisfactory way too with Jock, Miss Ellie being the oldest generation, JR/SE, Bobby/Pam, Ray/Donna being the second generation and Lucy, John Ross and Christopher being the third generation.
Yes, but that's not really the same as Lance, Cole and Vicky.
Cole and Vicky were not Angela's grandchildren.
The polls have now closed and the votes have been counted and verified. A record TWENTY people voted in last week's matches and the results are as follows:
Angela Channing - 13
Lilimae Clements - 7
Sable Colby - 10
Sue Ellen Ewing - 10
In the event of a draw, the casting vote goes to the first person to vote in that week's matches. That person was @Michelle Stevens who voted for Sue Ellen FOUR MINUTES before @Ome voted for Sable Colby. The winners of the last week's matches are therefore confirmed as:
Thanks to everyone who voted in last week's matches. Details of the next 2 second matches will be posted later today.
So we bid a sad farewell to Lilimae Clements and Sable Colby. Both put up a strong fight but ultimately their opponents proved to strong for them. The players' board has been updated accordingly:
The next 2 matches will involve a good versus bad battle and a fight between 2 characters who were seen by many to be the most significant in their respective shows. Who am I talking about? Full details will follow later today.
A wine maker and an alcoholic. Now tell me this isn't rigged.
Match 3: Alexis Colby vs Maggie Gioberti
Match 4: J.R. Ewing vs Abby Cunningham
The poll is now open.
Match 3- Alexis Colby
Match 4- JR Ewing
Cant go Joan Collins so it has to be Maggie Gioberti
2 JR Ewing naturally lol
Match 3 - Two great characters however so many villains have won matches it would be nice if a good guy came out on top occasionally. Maggie's fairness and loyalty was the perfect contrast to Angela's ruthlessness. Maggie Gioberti is my winner.
Match 4 - How can you choose between JR and Abby without feeling you've not been fair to one character. Both were compelling characters that made their respective shows gripping television. However, JR just edges it for me because he had such great put downs. JR Ewing is my winner.
Well done for getting the first vote again.
"Sue Ellen, you own me one."
Good timing but Match 3 was hard. I love Falcon Crest but I just had to vote for Alexis.
The most exciting world cup battle so far, because both of "The Wives" deserved to win.
Good to see that Sable made it this far, especially since The Colbys only had 2 competing characters.
Two women whose arrival transformed the soaps in which they appeared.
Match 3: Alexis (how can I possibly vote for someone else)
Match 4: Abby. (perhaps the only vote she will get)
Separate names with a comma.
