3rd quarter final match - Maggie
4th quarter final match - Karen
1. Maggie Gioberti, she's one of my favourite soap divas and I find everything she does interesting to watch.
2. I couldn't decide so I tossed a coin - Gary Ewing won.
Maggie was very sympathetic and nice, but when JR was at his best, there was no one to beat him - breathtakingly cruel, brilliantly funny, with an underlying need to win his daddy's approval, even from beyond the grave, that felt both dangerous and pathetic. His return in New DALLAS added a movingly human frailty into the mix. So JR.
Karen was reliable, funny and flawed. Gary was unpredictable, complicated and never stopped evolving. Plus Ted Shackelford’s acting was so good, you never really noticed he WAS acting. So Gary.
Leave it to soapdom’s most addictive personality to win a gamble.
But now he wants you to throw the coin again. And again.
Oh wow. A very persuasive post James. If I hadn’t already voted I’d be voting JR after reading this.
The poll has now closed and your votes have been counted and verified. Last weeks matches were amongst the closest we've had in this World Cup tournament with the lead in both matches changing after every 2 or 3 people voted. However, we have narrow but clear winners in both matches. The results of your voting in last 2 quarter final matches are as follows:
JR Ewing - 9
Maggie Gioberti - 11
Gary Ewing - 11
Karen MacKenzie - 9
The two characters going through to the semi-final are confirmed as being:
Thank you everybody who voted in last week's matches. Details of the semi-final matches will be posted later today.
We are now down to the final 4 characters and the players' board has been updated accordingly:
JR Ewing being knocked out at the quarter-final stage is a bit of an upset. Maggie is proving to be a very strong contender and the surprise package of the World Cup of 80s Prime Time Soap Characters. She has had the most difficult draw of anyone in this contest but she continues to win through. So far she has beaten Bobby Ewing who was a World Cup of Dallas finalist, Alexis Colby who is one of the most significant and well-loved Dynasty characters and now she has defeated the mighty JR. Can anyone stop her or will Maggie be the ultimate winner? Only you can decide. Details of both semi-final matches will be posted shortly.
Please note: at the semi-final stage you are no longer restricted to voting for only one character from the same soap. You may vote for any character to win either of the 2 matches.
The vote for this week's matches is now open.
2. Sue Ellen
Well, Falcon Crest has two characters passing into the semi-finals, Knots has one, and Dallas has one but not J.R., Cliff, or Pam. These are very unpredictable. Dynasty has none, but it's OK because you don't vote for Dynasties, they just impose their realm on you whether you want it or not, so I think it is appropriate that the people would not want to be ruled by the all-mighty Carringtons. After all,
So on to the vote:
2. Sue Ellen
2. Sue Ellen
I do! They're my happy tv family.
Not a big enough fan of any of the remaining characters to make a choice, so I won't vote in the semi-finals. I may vote in the final.
Match 1: Gary Ewing
Match 2: Maggie Gioberti Channing
Because I like him at least as much this round as last.
Because she didn’t get my vote last time. And because I’m thinking of that early smoulder.
Sue Ellen Ewing
Match 1: Angela was great as the wicked tyrant ("I'll break those Giobertis!") but after 4 seasons her character got a little too comfortable and she did some terrible comedy stuff in season 6 and 7. Gary could be very funny without intentional comedy, so I'm going to use that angle to vote for Gary Ewing.
Match 2: Sue Ellen is the queen-empress-diva of the prime time soap, how can I not vote for her? But you know what they say about some singers, "she can read the phone book and it still sounds great", well I think I have that with Maggie. "Doing the dishes" are some of her best scenes, much better than brain tumors and whatnot.
Then we have Sue Ellen in TNT Dallas and you wouldn't believe it's possible but she even better in that. But since everybody hates TNT Dallas, and because I do not want upset anyone, I'm afraid I have to ignore that particular argument.
So, my vote goes to Maggie Gioberti, doing the dishes or escaping from evil cartels, she always does it in the most elegant way possible.
I thought Linda Gray in TNT Dallas looked hotter than she did in the original.
And this World Cup is about the 80s shows only so TNT Dallas doesn't count.
Im going to buck the trend of voting for a Ewing in Round 1 and will vote for Angela Channing
as Im sure my mum would want me too as she liked Jane Wyman (as Ive said before) and Ive seen her house in LA!!
Round 2 - Sue Ellen
anyway it wouldn't be good to have 2 alcoholics in the final, they would fight over the vodka (hic)
Match 1 - Angela Channing: I love Knots and I loved Gary but Angela really drove her show. She was it's centrepiece. And as discussed before, Jane Wyman was unique at the time in that she was an actress in her 60's leading a soap (the two Barbaras - Bel Geddes & Stanwyck - were flying the flag too but were never the main stars of their shows). So while Gary was great, there were a lot of Gary-esque characters floating around on the soaps whereas there was only one Machiavellian OAP ruling her family with an iron fist.
Match 2 - Sue Ellen: no contest here I'm afraid. I appreciate the greatness of Susan Sullivan but Linda Gray is one of my favourites, so its Sue Ellen for the win.
