I'd rather root for an evil badass than a weak alcoholic. But hey, that's me.
They're both such great characters.
Angela reminds me in a way of the strong Northern battleaxes that sailed through Coronation Street in the 60's. People like Ena and Annie, who despite being a bit older were tough as nails, took no sh*t from anyone and were always on hand with a sardonic comment. Angela upped the ante by having real power and wealth. She was the Iron Lady of Tuscany Valley.
However, Sue Ellen is one of my favourites out of all the soaps. She was a mess but she was an interesting mess. And while Angela mostly held her position of power throughout her run on FC (bar the occasional eviction or coma), Sue Ellen's character arc was all over the place and that's why I love her. Trophy wife, booze hound, ex wife, new wife, cradle snatcher, booze hound, attempted murderer, high flying businesswoman, movie producer and so on. She was knocked down and got back up so many times, her run was non stop high drama. And that's why Sue Ellen Ewing gets my vote in this final.
Sue Ellen, honey. ALWAYS.
Go go Angela. I hope she wins!
The voting is currently neck and neck and either character can win. There's still time to vote for your winner of The World Cup of 80s Prime Time Soap Characters between Angela Channing and Sue Ellen Ewing. Post the name of the character you want to win on this thread. Alternatively, if you want to add some suspense to the final result, you can also vote secretly by sending me a direct message and I'll reveal how you voted once the poll has closed. Whichever way you vote, the poll closes at midnight on Sunday.
The wicked yet funny battleaxe of the California Tuscany Valley gets my vote - Angela Gioberti Channing Erickson Stavros Agretti.
Maggie meets up with Angela, in a meadow adjoining the northern vineyards of Falcon Crest, (a scene from season 7, 1987 - '88):
Angela: "Maggie it was very nice of you to meet me."
Maggie: "Well Angela, ahem I've always had a weak spot for sincerity. You sounded serious on the telephone."
Angela: "I was serious. I want to talk to you, mother to mother."
Angela: "Now I don't expect you to trust me but please hear me out."
Maggie: "I'm not going anywhere."
Angela: "I had a long talk with Fr. Bob, about family."
Maggie: "Don't tell me you're planning your reconciliation with Richard?"
Angela: "Well, I am religious but I don't put faith in miracles. Maggie I don't want my grandson to hate me. I want Michael to give me a chance."
Maggie: "Well Angela I'll do what I can but I can't talk for your son."
Although Sue Ellen was smashing I vote for Mrs. Channing.
It's now after midnight so the poll is now closed and voting in the final of the World Cup of 80s Prime Time Soaps has ended. The votes have been counted and verified and the winner will be announced at an awards show held at Daniel restaurant in Knots Landing:
Is that a wine bottle in her hand, maybe a liquor decanter? I can't tell.
I never should have talked my folks into hosting the ceremonies at Daniel. I have a feeling no matter who wins, we're going to have a LOT of broken dishes to pick up.
So another World Cup comes to an end. Congratulations to Angela Channing on her victory and to Sue Ellen for coming a close second.
Thank you to everyone who participated in this game, I hope you enjoyed it. It's been fun and interesting reading your comments and insights about why you prefer one character over another.
As Jason Colby said, the World Cup will be back in the New Year after taking a break so until then Merry Christmas and party on!
It's been an absolute blast and I've enjoyed every comment, re-living some of the characters journeys all in one thread. It's hard to believe that this all started back in July. Thank you for all the work you've done to make this happen and I look forward to the next World Cup - whatever it happens to be.
I'm also really pleased and proud of what you've done by bringing fans from across all the bigs soaps to participate in one gigantic thread
Congratulations to the Wicked Witch Of The West
^ Hear, hear.
I wonder if Jason ever told Sable that she couldn't paint...
Sable was no painter, she was a collector.
Because we never saw her paint, but saw her collect? We never saw her sculpt either. Yet she had her studio, by the beach.
Congratulations Angela Channing! I think it's important that we remember the elderly at this time of year who may be on their own or lonely at Christmas. So I think this is the perfect gift for this one little old lady who has touched our hearts and done so much for everyone in the Tuscany Valley. To you Angela!
Thank you Willie, that's really kind of you to say that. It's a joy having you around; your comments made my day. It goes to show that everyone needs a good Willie in their lives.
