    1. Ultimate Kylie
    [IMG]
Ostensibly it's just a simple close up portrait of a pretty girl, arguably airbrushed to perfection. And if Kylie weren't Kylie that would be that. But this is proof, if it's needed, of Kylie's x-factor. Naturally, it's aesthetically pleasing (the teased hair, the glamorously frosty make up), but more than that, it commands attention. The carefully and professionally applied mascara can't disguise how much is going on behind those sparkling blue eyes. It's all there - intelligence, humour, drama, sex. Everything that Kylie herself is radiates out, encapsulated in one look. Singer. Actress. Icon. Girl next door. Star.

    2. Kiss Me Once
    [IMG]
This is so beautiful. The romantic water droplets; the mystery of the opaque; the sepia tones giving way to the scarlet of Kylie's parted lips. The viewer has to look through something to get to Kylie, and this forces them to actually see her features in a way they otherwise wouldn't. At first glance I didn't expect to like this one as much as I do. And that's the trick.

    3. Light Years
    [IMG]
This round has proved to me that Kylie herself really has it. For all the arty covers she's had, I find myself drawn to the simpler ones that allow Kylie to simply be. A nubile young woman in a swimsuit with the sky in the background on a ... beach, is it? This kind of set up has appeared on hundreds of Ibiza club mix albums and thousands of posters for decades. Most of them straddle the line between cheap cliché and objectionable sexism. But there's something about this one that grabs the person looking at it. I could say how Kylie is turning the tables on the cliché by looking powerful while being objectified. But that would be another cliché (she does look rather superheroic though - almost as though she's about to blast a music critic with a laser beam from her right forefinger). The bottom line with this is that everything works. The shadows on Kylie's curvaceous form; the sunset forming a halo around Kylie's neck as though she's been gifted a heavenly choker from the gods themselves. Both factors play round with the album title. And it's beautifully shot. But this really isn't about traditional art. It's about appealing to the masses. Taking something that's been badly done a million times and making you realise what everyone else was trying to do. It's effortless and simple on the surface while the reality is that much work is going on under those still waters to make it so appealing. In other words, it's about great pop music.

    4. Fever
    [IMG]
The legs. The bum. The hair. The heels. Even in contrasting black, the mic is almost the last thing one notices. And there's something inevitable about that. It's been seen before and since, but that makes it feel all the more knowing and right. It's simply staged, minimalist and almost crude. But it's also fun, unpretentious and - for all the proffered sexiness - quite innocent: a bit like watching a little girl dressed up and tottering round in Mum's heels, in danger of tripping over the flex to the hairdryer. Which is quite charming.

    5. Kylie
    [IMG]
The original. I never thought of it as (to use a horribly overused word) iconic then, but it's become part of the psyche over the last thirty (THIRTY!!) years. This is Kylie at her most winsome and ingenuous. It's impossible to see this without being taken back to 1988: a time when Kylie was still appearing in Neighbours and the idea of her as a singer was a novelty to say the least. Nobody seemed to be thinking ahead then (and who'd have believed it if anyone had). It was a time for enjoying the moment and those first ten simple pop songs. The beginning, in all its youthful, clunky, simple perfection.

I crave a straight-to-DVD film based on this album cover.

It should be made on a budget of £7.49 by Hammer films. Joe Pasquale is a natural for Poseidon while Zeus and Dione would be played, naturally, by The Krankies.

As in the album cover, the sets will be supplied by Dyson.

I had a hard time trying to pick a PWL album, as I love Rhythm of Love equally as much with that jeans and white shirt cover. I just really love Let's Get To It's big '90s does '60s look.
Light Years is number 1 because it was such a joyous celebration and return to form and I loved the '70s glamour disco look of it all. She's stunning on that cover... Imagine even having picture that good of yourself.
Aphrodite is just Kylie as the pop Goddess she really is and we all knew she was. Ultimate Kylie is such a pretty cover too, those lips, that eye makeup. And the album always brings me good memories, as I associate it with the first time I ever saw Kylie live in Dublin with the Show Girl tour. I played it nonstop on the 3 hour car journey there. I also bough the Ultimate Kylie DVD in Dublin that weekend too.
Fever is ice cold synth pop disco and that cover is just so early '80s. It's a perfect cover for that album.

EDIT - I have no idea what happened with the text formatting here... but I'm too lazy to even bother to work it out or try to change it.

I'm kinda shocked she has 5 albums. But then I have 3 of them. The Fame, The Fame Monster and Born This Way. Still I think I'll sit this one out. Surprisingly despite her rather strong image, her covers don't really do much for me.

I think she has 6 albums because The Fame and The Fame Monster are technically different albums because the latter had additional tracks added to it.

Also, there are international editions of her albums, some of which had different covers, and some digital downloads had a different "cover" from the physical CD. Some CDs were also reissued with different covers, so there is a bit more choice than you might think.
