We got away from work earlier today and it took me well over 2 hours to go 10 miles
It was horrible driving in it, most cars were respectful and kept a distance but there is always 1 idiot in a hurry!!

Stay Safe wherever you are, Im lucky i made it home but not sure that I will get into work tomorrow as its forecast thro the night and its now very deep.

Scotland's first ever red snow warning has come into force as severe weather causes major disruption across swathes of the UK for a second day.

The Met Office alert means a risk to life is likely and urges people to "take action now" to keep safe.

Amber warnings are also in place for other parts of Scotland, northern and eastern England and the East Midlands.

Thousands of schools have been closed, and there is major disruption on roads, the rail network and at airports.

The red alert covers Scotland's central belt - from Edinburgh to Glasgow - from 15:00 GMT until 10:00 on Thursday.

The forecast from the Met Office, which lasts until 10:00 on Thursday, said: "Roads will become blocked by deep snow, with many stranded vehicles and passengers.

"Long delays and cancellations on bus, rail and air travel are expected [and] some communities could become cut off for several days."

It comes as numerous police forces across the UK urged people not to drive. Large sections of major routes were closed with motorists stranded in treacherous conditions.

The worst affected areas have been Kent, East Anglia and north-east England, but problems are continuing.

Meanwhile airports including London City, Glasgow and Newcastle suspended flights, and more than 100 flights at Heathrow were cancelled.

On the rail network, almost all operators have been affected by the conditions. The West Coast Main Line is closed between Carlisle and Scotland with no trains or replacement buses.

More than 2,624 schools in England and 1,600 in Scotland have been closed, with the expectation that many will remain shut tomorrow.

Rural communities have also been warned they could be cut off by power outages and mobile phone signal failures.

We have got off fairly lightly so far, although Thursday and Friday's forecasts look bad.

The maddening thing is the people who simply have not a clue how to drive in the snow and ice, especially those driving 4x4s who somehow think that four-wheel-drive leaves you indestructible. Four-wheel-drive is a great assistance, but if someone insists on driving like a halfwit, it will not help one little bit.

Some of the driving I saw this evening on my way home defied belief, I think the drivers must have been wearing blinkers.

I have never seen anything like this in my lifetime!!!

I had to walk 3 miles to get to the nearest NHS property and I felt i had climbed a mountain and i fell over twice

Roll on summer and a long hot one, I dont like this at all!
    Stay safe and warm

@Swami - I didnt have a hope of getting my car out to drive it this morning and the side roads are awful
By the time i was walking home they had cleared 1 main road so walked along that but sure some cars were going over 30 miles / hour!

Countries like Sweden and Norway must be looking at this and wondering what the fuss is all about. Granted this appears to be especially bad in the south of NI, Scotland and England but things shouldn't grind to a standstill just because of snow.

Equally there has in recent times to overreact to every conceivable storm or period of adverse weather and then when a genuinely bad spell of weather comes around, like now - the relevant authorities aren't remotely prepared.

I have to say that when i was walking to "work" today I saw Police cars going up and down the road, Gritters out and snow ploughs and the main road which was pretty awful en route to work, was passable with care on journey home

I did wonder about sticking out my thumb to see if the police car would give me a lift, then decided not to!

They were fixing a lot of potholes near here on Tuesday which I thought was a bit premature as the with the bad weather predicted, any repairs may well be undone almost immediately.

It has been remarkably hit-and-miss here - normally we get it very bad snow-wise, and yet have very little. Counties Armagh and Down are very much worst hit this time.

Actually, we get stories about how horrible the snow is a few times of the year and how it incapacitates the traffic.
