Well, Gary was Miss Ellie's favourite..and Bobby was Jock's..
I like Jock and Miss Ellie a lot but that is one thing, probably the only thing about them I seriously don't like. You should never have a favorite son or a favorite daughter. To do so is terribly destructive.
To all parents: If you don't love your children equally, then learn to do it now. Your children do not have to earn your love. A parent's love for a child should be unconditional just as God's love for us, his children, is unconditional. As such, nothing a child ever does can increase or decrease that amount of love you have for them. Therefore it should be impossible for one of your children to gain more of your love than another of your children. See how that works?
The majority of the problems the Ewings had with their adult children and the problems their children had in their own lives were direct consequences of favoritism by their parents.
People do though, if they are being honest. It doesn't usually mean that they dislike their other kids, just that they are closer to one. For example, if one of your kids likes things that you like then you are likely to be closer to that kid than another kid who is into totally different things from you or things that you don't like. A good parent will love that different kid for their differences anyway, but they still won't be as close. So Jock could have been much nicer to Gary, tolerated his differences, and seen him as special in a different way to Bobby and J.R., as Miss Ellie did, but Jock still wouldn't have been as close to Gary anyway.
