So many well known songs in the English language were based on songs originally written and recorded in another language. If you have any favourites, post them on this thread.

    My Way/Comme D'Habitude

My Way, popularised by Frank Sinatra, was originally written and recorded in French by the singer Claude Francois.

    Seasons In The Sun/Le Moribond

Probably my favourite French song from the 60s was made into one of my favourite English songs of the 70s. Originally written and recorded by Jacques Brel.

Seasons In The Sun (Terry Jacks)

This is a lovely song and I’m so pleased to see we’re going to be exploring it further in the ‘Soap Chat Standards’ Thread.
Well done, to whoever suggested it :gotcha:

Jacques Brel was such a good songwriter and I totally agree with you that his singing was, "wonderfully atmospheric". Check out his version of Le Port d'Amsterdam which was covered by David Bowie in English as The Port of Amsterdam.

I'm a bit of a Jacques Brel fan. Another great song of his that was covered in English was Au suivant which The Sensational Alex Harvey Band memorably as Next

Probably a better know song is Beyond the Sea - popularised in English by Bobby Darrin was originally written in French and was a hit for Charles Trenet called La Mer.

Mack The Knife/Die Moritat von Mackie Messer
Mack the Knife was first recorded in English by Louis Armstrong but the best know version is probably the one preformed by Bobby Darrin. However, it was originally written in German by Kurt Weill for his wife Lotte Lenya.

Not quite the same thing but I hope this song...

Which is a cover of this...

Gets recorded in English and makes it's way onto Celine's new album as I love the song and her singing it.

The Windmills of You Mind/Les Moulins de Mon Coeur

This one is a bit of a cheat because it was written by French composer Michel Legrand but was first recorded in English by Noel Harrison. Michel Legrand later released his own version in French.

Cherry Pink and Apple Blossom White/Cerisier Rose et Pommier Blanc

Originally a hit in French for André Claveau, the song has been covered many times in English, with the version by Alan Dale probably the best know.

    I really like this song:

    "It's My Party"

I think the English version was released before the Swedish one though...

    "Leva Livet"
