I read the script of the first episode and Jack, Jenna and Donna were in it as guests at Christopher’s wedding to Rebecca. Could it be possible that they wanted these characters to be in the new series? I think they would have been just fillers, like Lucy and Ray, but I must say I really would have like to see them!!

Dack Rambo died in 1994, so Jack would have been a pretty tall order.

In the majority of the examples you've mentioned, the recast characters served a functional role in the plot. They weren't "just fillers". So there was some logic to recasting them.

It seems, to say the least, a little silly to recast a character (and by most viewers' standards a secondary one) for the sole purpose of a brief cameo supposed to elicit feelings of nostalgia in viewers of the original.

If they filled the pants, hmm--the role-- right, it could be for more than nostalgia

Shalane McCall's last TV work dates from 1988, so that would have been a spectacular return.

Having both Donna and Jenna return with Ray could have been interesting, especially if they brought Margaret and Lucas with them. The path the show took though unfortunately suggests that that wouldn't have happened.

I'm assuming that they didn't know Dack Rambo died when they wrote the pilot script.

But yes, they would've definitively been filler characters. The only other one of the original cast I could've seen them wanting to return full time was Pam, but of Victoria has her principles...

I could have lived without a Jack recast or seeing Priscilla Presley in TNT Dallas but Susan Howard would have been great. In my continuation she sits proudly in my opening credits.

They could have been there for all we know ;) The lack of depth they gave Lucy and Ray tells me they were never going to develop anything meaningful from a guest appearance at the wedding.

True, was just having a bit of fun with ya. ;-)

We will never know if they were supposed to be just fillers, though (although I think they would have been). Maybe - while writing the script - there was some serious thinking about the trio making a regular comeback and then a recast would have been a possibility (who am I kidding?). They could have made Jack Jenna's third husband after her divorce from Ray, who had remarried Donna in the meantime. The troubles this would cause between Ann-Bobby-Donna-Jack-Jenna-Ray!

well CC didnt have a :eck: clue so im surprised

lane ballou, maggie Gioberti and sable Colby werent included along with Bet Lynch and Meg Mortimer - such was the grip and feel she had for the show

I think that Charlene and Steve were treated very shoddily and i just wish they had said no! It was hardly worth packing a suitcase and flying to texas for!

I remember discussing the show when it was still on the air, and mentioning how odd it was that characters like Lucy and Ray didn't have any meaningful conversations with the family. Someone replied with "It's not that kind of show." And that's precisely the problem. The original Dallas was that type of show because it was a primetime soap. Not every scene existed for the sole purpose of serving the plot. The characters had conversations with each other and discussed their lives. On new Dallas, cameos from original characters offered no insight into their lives over the past 20 years. They were basically guests who got to say "hi" and "bye." The most any of them got to do was at JR's memorial. They all deserved better.

And thats why it failed...................badly. If it couldnt keep a die hard Original Dallas fan like me happy - that says a lot - and I do wish it had never been made.

I really didnt give a stuff about anyone except JR - I didnt recognise Cliff, Bobby was so annoying and once Larry died, I was tuning out anyway and that helped me!

It would have been nice to see Donna return, if only for a few episodes.

There is no possible reason for Jack to have returned even if Rambo were alive. Jack served no purpose even in his final season on the show....

Jenna returns with Ray and we get a bit more back ground on them and their children, especially Lucas. Ray and Jenna bought the old Wade Ranch and fixed it up. Living just like JR wanted for Bobby.
Jack - I just wouldn’t do without the original actor. Let it go.
Donna is a former Secretary of Energy and current Senator - a very big deal to reference for help as the Ewing’s need her, Aunt Donna to the boys. She’d make a great supporting cast member. And could at least reference Margret.
And we needed more from Lucy besides being so helpful to whiny Bobby. Maybe make her a colorful Auntie Mame type, traveling the world, just left husband number seven, living life large.

Margret could have been an interesting character along with Lucas. A lot of people bring up Lucas as a possibility due to the potential conflicts he could have with both Bobby and Christopher, but I also wonder what Margret and Lucas' relationship would be like?

Think about it, they'd both be around the same age, and while Lucas could possibly feel resentful when he eventually learns that Bobby is his biological father, how would Marget feel when she finds that out? Ray is her father, yet instead of sticking around and helping her mother raise her, Ray moved off to Sweden to help raise Bobby's son. That's gotta cause some resentment towards Ray and jealousy towards Lucas.

Maybe they join forces and come to Dallas to destroy the rest of the family (since neither would have any type of nostaligic feeling toward Southfork or Ewing Oil), while each is secretly planning to also betray the other?
