It certainly was then, especially the O-R CBS one of my youth. That newer TNT Dallas, at least IMO, just didn't have what the CBS show had to offer then!

Bumped up this thread to include the full version of the original theme tune to Australian soap, Home and Away.

I hadn't appreciated what a beautiful song it is until now.

    2017 I think (unless it is 2016)
    1) Dynasty. It is regal and expansive, like the show itself in its first season. The trumpet reminds you of medieval royal parties going on a fox hunt. No soap theme matches a show's title so well.

    2) The Bold and the Beautiful first HD theme

Shot cleverly to make it seem like a fashion show, the theme actually served to remind what the show was supposed to be: the exciting world of fashion.

    3) Falcon Crest's season 9 theme

While daring to tamper with a Bill Conti theme is the definition of musical hubris, the darting tempo of this version and the grittier title cards gives a vision of the show as it wanted to be in season 9, but it just fumbled in the attempt.

    Honorable mention:

I wish Return to Eden: The Series had used this version of their theme rather than the more 80s pop version they went for.

Oh - that takes me back. I had the 7". B/W Living In Summer Bay. Pure class!

I feel the same way about many of those vocal Aussie themes. I have to be in the right frame of mind to fully appreciate them.

I'm glad we had both versions as they're both pretty fantastic.

Why didn't they keep the more bombastic version from the mini-series (without the voice-over, of course).
The one they used for the sequel series isn't very memorable (and the title cards could have been better*) although it could work for a "Hotel" style series.

*Peta Toppano and Angelo D'Angelo got the best ones (imo).

    1. Dallas. The theme song perfectly embodies everything about the series. It was big, bold and brassy.
    2. Dynasty. With its sweeping melody it typifies what I expect to witness. Wealth and melodrama.
    3. Sons & Daughters. Australia had this uncanny knack to use vocal themes but they somehow work.
But most of all I miss the use of TV Themes. It was a great trick on the producers part to let the viewers know the show was about to begin.

It is a shame that so many modern shows do not have theme songs or opening/closing credits, or just treat them as an afterthought. The cavalier attitude modern TV producers have about them (basically saying "Oh, nobody cares about the opening credits") shows that many producers have become detached from their audience. The daytime soap General Hospital recently abandoned its longer opening credits for a cheap, fast version where still photos of the actors are seen scrolling for fractions of a second each ("an epileptic's nightmare," one of my friends joked). It has no personality at all. It's more like a mid-commercial bumper than a theme/opening. The late-1970s opening, featuring an ambulance rushing toward a large, urban hospital was about the same length of this quick-pic opening, but it had so much personality and fit the series perfectly. You heard the theme and the siren of the ambulance and it got you ready and primed to watch.

I miss this too. It's what made watching all my favourite shows much more.

But on a plus side, I do like that some shows don't show who is guest starring in each episode. It makes for a much better reveal if they are bringing any particular character back.

I always preferred when a special guest star was screened in the closing credits, not the opening credits because of your reason.

Look at how much thought goes into (a different per episode) the title sequence of "Game of Thrones." Clearly some creators still think they matter. But the network approach is the same wholesale mentality that is further eroding their viewership.

Now I want to see someone make videos with the opening credits to Dallas, Knots Landing, Dynasty, The Colbys and Falcon Crest and replace their themes with the ones from EastEnders, Coronation Street, Brookside, Emmerdale and Crossroads.

That would be fun! I think Emmerdale would have to go with Dynasty, and I guess it would make sense for Brookside to be on Knots Landing's. But after that it gets tricky, imagining the Coronation street theme over Falcon Crest opening credits, or Eastenders over Dallas, does all sorts of weird things to my brain.

I actually just did a very dodgy mashup using two youtube videos. The Dallas opening credits on mute with the 1980s Emmerdale theme and it works really well. The only thing is that the Emmerdale theme is only 40 something seconds long so it just reaches until the title DALLAS appears on screen and then stops. It doesn't last until the cast appears. I wonder if there is an extended version. Emmerdale works with Dallas in a weird way as the aerial shots featuring farms/ranches and cattle.

Oh, interesting experiment. I had the more recent orchestral version of Emmerdale in mind for Dynasty, but I'll try out your Dallas/80's Emmerdale combo. I just listened to the Crossroads theme. I'm wondering if it might just work with Falcon Crest.

Oh God the Dynasty credits works so well with the 80s EastEnders theme. It seems so romantic! Like I wasn't expecting that!

Ha.. I did too! It's great. The music just swells lightly as Susan Sullivan's credit appears.
