How would the family react?
I'm surprised they didn't go there. Afton was around Lucy's age, so the difference didn't seem to bother the writers. I think it was a missed opportunity.
Now you mention it, it’s surprising that ol’ opportunistic Cliff didn’t attempt to further irritate the Ewings by wooing Lucy. Didn’t she remark in one episode that she found him rather dishy? I recall that line especially vividly because I always regarded Cliff as having the sexual allure of a wet sock.
I thought of that when I saw this thread's title. I remember Lucy discussing "that gorgeous Cliff Barnes" in one of the earlier episodes.
Another missed opportunity for sure.
He did marry Lucy's effective replacement Jamie so, yeah, perhaps it's something that could have happened.
Ummm, I don't think I ever acknowledged Jamie as Lucy's replacement before.
it would have been worth it for their attempts at conversation alone
I remember those episodes, let's not forget one of the other characters made intimations where Lucy came out with a similar line to "That gorgeous Cliff Barnes is gay!"
Maybe that's why they never got together, she didn't want to repeat the mistakes made with Kit Mainwaring.
I admit that would have been drama. But the age difference aside, this is a man who hates her family and tried to have her grandfather convicted of murder.
Lucy with Pam and Cliff's cousin Jimmy might have been interesting.
It occurred to me that it would be even juicier if Lucy had started off as J.R.'s daughter he raised from first wife Valene, as I had detailed out in another thread. J.R. wouldn't know whether to shit or go blind if his little girl would have wound up with Cliff Barnes. Imagine his luck - both of his children marry Barnes': Lucy with Cliff and John Ross with Pamela Rebecca. I think they should have called her Becky.
I don't know if I would have liked to see them pair up romantically but I think more scenes would have been nice. Little schemes to pass J.R. off and maybe Lucy could have helped Cliff track down Pam after she disappeared.
