What stage in the show did we have Melissa at her best?
Early noirish femme fatale Melissa when she was cool, calculating and borderline evil for me, please.
I can't vote, i always liked Melissa the same (VERY MUCH!) in all her different "stages", even in S8. That scene in the season opener, when she rushes through all rooms of HER Falcon Crest mansion and feels haunted by Angela and then she imagined Angela suddenly sitting at her desk, staring at her - so gothic and cool!
Wouldn't want to miss her in any of the seasons and really hated that she wasn't still there in S9 and got "replaced" by that Pilar woman! Most stupid decision ever!
Everything was better in S1 thru S3, so of course Melissa was too.
But I also liked the embittered and damaged Chase season 4-6, it was one of SoapLand's true tragedies.
And it also made sense that Melissa ended up like a nutcase, and that Richard would kill the thing/person he loved the most.
For all its over the top plotting, Falcon Crest seemed particularly organic (in the grand scheme of things), almost like a Michael J. Bird novel.
I agree with this. Melissa was a great character and always was interesting and entertaining to watch but she was best it the first few seasons when she flitted between Lance and Cole while manoeuvring to get Falcon Crest.
FALCON CREST would certainly have been much duller without Melissa around. From season 5 onwards she had a tendency to go a bit cuckoo. This aside the Agretti woman was still very entertaining. Although those early seasons from 1 to 3 provided someone who complemented the gothic element of the show perfectly.
Melissa and Lance are just about to cut their wedding cake. Lance then announces something to Melissa, (a scene from season 1, 1981 - '82):
Lance: "Enjoy it while you can Melissa because the first chance I get I'm filing for an annulment."
Melissa: "And what would your grandmother have to say about that?"
Lance: "After living with you for a month at Falcon Crest I'm sure she would insist on it."
Melissa: "Even when I tell her I'm pregnant."
Melissa puts a piece of cake into Lance's mouth, after he says the baby isn't his. Melissa tells him the baby is now.
Season 1 to 3. Spats over grapes became more attractive.
