I posted this question long ago on SoapChat 1.0, but thought I’d ask again with so many new people joining the forum since then.

My vote is Jock. Though he never appeared on the series, his death changed the entire cul-de-sac’s lives.

I would add Bobby to the list. Both his death and Resurrection...
    Otherwise really good question.
Sid was kinda Knots 1.0 so his death made knots 2.0 possible.

Jock's death left Gary a fortune, which Abby made a beeline for, probably setting her sights on it as soon as heard Gary's last name prior to Jock's actual death. This gave them the money to do more 80's soap opera things, as opposed to remaining on the middle class trappings of the shows previous years. Abby and Gary' investments and Abby's schemes affected everyone on the show.

I read somewhere that David Jacob's thought the most significant addition to the cast was Mack(Kevin Dobson). I'm assuming he would cinsuder Sid's death having the most effect on the show Since it opened the door for Mack.

Interesting question but for me I would say Sid as it forced the tone of the show to change.

I felt it could almost have started at this point. I would never have liked Karen as much if this hadn't happened. Then No Mac, Paige or Ann.

It felt like a new chapter.

I think I said Jock last time but this time I'm saying Sid. Gary's inheritance made it possible to go upmarket but it's hard to imagine Abby, and Karen, too, changing so much if Sid was still around to rein them in.

This is a very good point. I wonder what Abby would have been like if Sid remained alive. I know writers wanted a villain for the show, but it would have been interesting to see how they would have had Abby navigate her schemes despite Sid's influence on her. They were polar opposites. She was avaricious and ruthless, while he was a humble, almost saint like man whom she admired.

I ignore Bobby’s death because it really didn't change anything other than Val naming one of her twins after him. Though it severed the Dallas/KL crossovers, it didn’t alter the show at all.

Jock was the one that changed the show the most. Gary getting his inheritance changed everyone’s lives for the rest of the series’ run.

Maybe the death of Sid and Abby's uncle?

I always wondered if they realized they wrote a goof in that whole Uncle Roger storyline. In a previous season there had been a visit from Abby and Sid's nephew, Paul, Jr. (the son of Sid and Abby's older brother, Paul, Sr.). When Sid, Abby, and Paul's Uncle Roger died, his apartment building was willed to his nieces and nephews---
Paul was conveniently forgotten and/or left out of the transaction
. Karen got her part due to being Sid's widow; if Paul Sr. was deceased, then Paul, Jr. would have inherited that piece, and of course Abby got her part.

Maybe Paul, Jr. was too busy hanging out with his cousin Annie to be bothered. *

But what if Jim Davis hadn't died? Abby's always been an enterprising person, therefore I don't feel Gary's money changed her.
I'm convinced they would have thought of something to inject some wealth and glamour into the Dallas spin-off in order to keep up with the hugely popular parent show and its glamorous rival "D".
I think Greg Sumner was the character mostly affected by a legacy.

I voted for Sid. It was so sad when he died and it did change the show a lot.

Still I do agree that Jock's death had a great impact on Knots Landing too, which is intersting considering that Jock never appeared in a single episode of the show.

One could theorise some family feud whereby that branch was deliberately snubbed.

That's pretty much what I meant. Bobby's Resurrection caused a separation between the show. Although it's hypothetical they could have had more crossovers.

I would have voted Paul Galveston. The last six or seven seasons the show could have been renamed “The Sumner Group”. Wouldn’t have been possible without Paul Galveston’s death. Jock’s and Sid’s deaths had no impact on this, the main focus of the last half of the series.
