I was wondering if Samuel Fellows would have been a good writer and producer for Nu Dallas. I really loved how he made such marvelous charactors and storylines on Downton Abbey. I don't know who wrote Guiding Light or upstairs downstairs. Who do you think would have been good a good writer and producer?

Contrary to popular opinion, I don't think Cidre is a bad writer or producer. What she needed was someone with a knowledge of the show to help her maintain some consistency with the original.

Most of us agreed at the time that the actual J.R.'s Masterpiece funeral episode, which was written by her, was very good. So yes, she had talent. But she needed better understanding of what made the original series work, as well as where it needed to be properly updated. I think things like how she admitted that they often wrote the cliffhangers first, showed that she only had a superficial understanding of the show. Yeah, Dallas had some wild cliffhangers, but most of them made sense, they weren't just for shock value. But with DallasTNT we got things like Anne shooting Harris point-blank, which was a great cliffhanger, but then he somehow survives and she doesn't go to jail, which shows that they didn't really think through the logical consequences of that act, so they should have never done that in the first place.

To paraphrase a Flannery O'Connor story, Cidre would have been a good writer if someone were there to shoot her every day of her life.
It's not that she did not understand the soap opera genre or what made original DALLAS work. It's that she obviously did not care to learn. So while there is tons of back story, she creates a whole new Hispanic family that we had never seen on screen all these years. Then she turns Cliff into a Bond villain willing to sacrifice even his own daughter. And even when she stumbles onto a good story (Judith Light's gothic family tree and mansions) she turns into a drug cartel story for the Vin Diesel crowd.

Although he was still doing Breaking Bad at the time, I'd love to have seen Vince Gilligan's take on Dallas. He has an amazing attention to detail and is great at character driven drama.

It still boggles my mind that Dallas was handed to Cidre on a platter by Warner Horizon without knowing what she planned on doing with it.

Good point. If she cared to learn Carmen would have been Teresa’s sister or some such. Cliff would have been mentally ill to do the things he did. Christoper, not John Ross would have had the chip on his shoulder trying to prove himself. Anne would have been a Leland or some such family. And she’s have constantly drawn back to and referenced people long gone and scenes long past.
