Corrie fans were left with a classic soap cliffhanger on Monday after Ken Barlow (William Roache) was found at the bottom of his stairs unconscious.

And fans were left wondering if he fell or he was he pushed.

Long-running Street resident Barlow suffered a stroke in the autumn, so many wondered if he was ill again.

But with Barlow having rubbed up family members, neighbours and acquaintances the wrong way in recent weeks, could he have been shoved?

We take a look back at some of the best of TV's whodunnits from over the past few years.

    Who shot JR?
Who could forget this long-running saga involving the Dallas oil baron we all loved to hate?

It took eight months for viewers to discover that JR's sister-in-law and former mistress, Kristin Shepard. But not before JR's long-suffering wife Sue Ellen got the blame first and was jailed.

T-shirts printed with the slogans "Who Shot JR?" and "I Shot JR" flew off the shelves in the summer of 1980.

The storyline became one of television's first big water-cooler moments and prompted pretty much every soap going to get in on the cliffhanger act.

And every bloody series that uses the cliffhanger can give thanks to Dallas. What a legacy for Dallas to leave. :hat:

Yes but they will still make fun and say 'we don't want to do a Dallas' - but then have various other characters coming back from the dead 18 years later?! Yeah, stroll on! (EastEnders).

I know we have a younger generation who first saw Dallas in reruns, so for those of you who didn't get to experience it live, here is one reason that Who Shot JR was such a big deal at the time:

It was 1980 and there was uncertainty and unrest in a lot of places. We heard new words for the first time ever-- layoffs, downsizing, corporate restructuring. Pensions for the first time were at risk. Inflation was rampant and unemployment was high. A record heat wave damaged crops in the U.S.

    We desperately needed a distraction!

And along came A House Divided. Finally! A topic of conversation that didn't involve politics, the economy, or religion. We all talked about it, all summer long.

Billboards everywhere went from boring old advertising to showing business owner's exclaiming "I shot J.R."

Watercooler talk went from, "Some weather, huh?" to "Who do you think shot J.R.?"

It was a perfect cliffhanger at a perfect time.

I'll add the "Who shot J.R.?, as THE best ever. Why? Because it had such an impact around the world. Everyone was talking about it and didn't the Queen Mother ask Larry Hagman to tell her who was the culprit?
