For all the grandmotherly qualities attributed to Miss Ellie, she was also an angry, haunted woman -- and seemed to have a fair amount of anger towards her first husband, Jock.

Why was she harboring that kind of anger at him?

Most of it is down to their eldest 2 children, J.R. and Gary. Gary was different, as he loved animals, avoided pressures, had no interest in Ewing Oil, loved hedonistic pleasures, cared about people and the environment. While Gary ran away from pressures and was considered "weak", he was also stubborn about living life his way, and finding his own way in life, with an underlying frustration and anger which greatly unnerved J.R. about Gary. Jock did not deal well with Gary's personality at all, while Miss Ellie loved Gary being different and more like the Southworth tradition. The story about Gary and Val as teenage newlyweds and their daughter Lucy is well known, as well as what J.R. did to them. Miss Ellie hates how her beloved Gary was driven away and treated so badly by Jock and J.R.

As for J.R., he was the one who was taught by Jock from a very young age about the most ruthless business practices, becoming Jock's heir in this regard. Unfortunately for J.R., while he excelled at ruthless business and idolized his father, there are serious gaps in his overall personality as he has virtually none of Jock's positive qualities. Miss Ellie regrets this, and her own role in not have more of an influence in his young life.

There might possibly be a bit of bitterness regarding Digger Barnes too, even though Miss Ellie said that she had no regrets about marrying Jock. Miss Ellie married Jock in order to save Southfork Ranch, and she did mention how they had to work at their marriage in the early years, and didn't love each other strongly until later.

I actually see Jock as worse than JR. JR was just a spoiled rich kid. While Jock was a cold, predatory man, one who could exude -- by the time we met him -- this 'friendly' grandfatherly manner with certain family members and select friends, typical schizoid behavior for a mob boss. And those family and friends lavished the kind of praise over him always reserved for The Devil.

Even his will was structured so that the family destroyed itself unnecessarily, and all they could do was thank him for it.

And she made him shave his porn stache!

Some people have argued that Jock loved Ellie the most and that she took advantage of it. Which is a pretty interesting interpretation of their relationship. What I saw was a woman who loved and idolized her husband at least as much as he did her, but was conflicted over his darker tendencies and mostly trying to ignore them -- and on the rare occasion she couldn't contain herself anymore and spoke out, she'd somehow betrayed their bond and revealed her lack of love for him.

And she'd wind up in the Krebbs' living room yet again giving what seemed to be annual "the hate was all inside of me, no one else, because I'm a whore and slut and a bitch and a c***..." mea culpa speech as Uncle Lenny deemed appropriate.

Sometimes this show was just strange.

"It's all my fault, dear. I should probably be fired and just die..."

Jock had a lot of different sides to him. Jock was loved and hated by a lot of people. J.R. was hated by a lot of people, but had very few who loved him. J.R. is like the distilled essence of Jock's bad side. Jock's motto seemed to be "Try to do right by people (especially your friends), but if you can't get your way then do what you have to do". J.R.'s motto is "Do unto others before they do unto you", as he assumes that every person potentially in his way is out to get him.

Jock always said that you had to let a man have a bit of pride left. J.R. never seemed to learn that, but even Jock occasionally forgot (e.g. Tom Owens).

J.R., Bobby and Harv Smithfield helped in that, even though they were alive to see what was going on. They failed to remember Jock's old saying that power is something you take. They were all "Oh, daddy wanted this and daddy wanted that".

Due to Bobby, Punk, Donna and Ray poking their noses into J.R.'s business as to why he was pumping full out with a variance (and getting increasingly crazy with J.R. in the process), Miss Ellie and Pam tried to break Jock's Will, with the help of Brooks Oliver. They failed. The consequences of their failure to break Jock's Will were utterly disastrous for the Ewing family and for people involved with them. They all came out losers. Yet it was J.R., Bobby and Harv Smithfield who did everything in their power to keep Jock's Will in force. They couldn't see the bigger picture, and the harm being caused. Great drama, though. In the end, J.R. and Bobby split their share 35% a piece anyway, after Bobby became the official winner with that Canadian field coming in just on time.

J.R. initially set up Carol Driscoll for a driving offence, so that Walt Driscoll would give J.R. (but not Bobby) a variance to pump out oil at maximum capacity. The result of this is that Walt Driscoll went from being clean-cut to corrupt, seemingly learning from J.R.

What were the consequences of Bobby, Punk, Donna and Ray then poking their noses into J.R.'s business?

Bobby, at a loss to understand what J.R.'s plans were, falsely accused J.R. of selling oil to an embargoed country, when J.R. was actually planning to open up cheap gas stations to get quick profits

Bobby sets up a TEC man with cocaine, to blackmail him into ending J.R.'s variance

Rebecca's death, when she tries to stop J.R. from buying an oil refinery

J.R. then gets together with Walt Driscoll to ship oil to Cuba, remembering Bobby's old idea after J.R.'s variance is ended

Pam and Bobby's separation due to Rebecca's death, and later eventual divorce with Katherine's interference

Bobby and Ray set up Walt Driscoll by putting loaded pistols in his case, setting off a disastrous chain of events, firstly with Walt Driscoll getting jailed and J.R. spending time in a Cuban jail as he tried to get his money for the shipment of oil

J.R.'s vicious dealing with Holly Harwood as his desperation increases, and her getting him into bed, and setting it up so that Sue Ellen found out, with Sue Ellen then falling off the wagon

Sue Ellen falling off the wagon sees her trying to drive J.R.'s car while drunk, with Mickey trying to stop her, at Lucy's urging

Walt Driscoll, thanks to Bobby and Ray's set-up actions, got jailed, went mad, blamed J.R. for preferring to let him rot in jail, and tried to kill J.R. Instead, Walt Driscoll paralyzed Mickey, which later resulted in Driscoll's suicide and Mickey's death

Then there's Miss Ellie having a bit of a nervous breakdown, and the Southfork fire.

Oh, Sarah's "who did anger the best?" thread made me think of this -- nice that I'm so consistent, aside from that dynasterian "S3 thru S8 sux" stuff.
