50s, 60s, 70s...or do you prefer it to be an 80s soap?
Would they have done those outrageous cliffhangers in the 1960s? Hmm....

I'm satisfied with it being an 80s soap, though I do like the idea of it happening in the Golden Age of Hollywood. But are we imagining the characters being played by the same actors in the same ages as they were in the 80s?

And do we have to imagine it in an earlier decade? Can it be more current? I am curious to see how it would have been handled as an HBO series.

Same characters, same age - so I guess it wouldn't be possible to use the same actors.

I've never seen an HBO soap series and as for Dynasty in a more current setting, do you think it would have the same charm?
Some of the current shows are really awesome but still I think they lack a certain...je ne sais quoi.

It wouldn't be Dynasty without the huge hair and shoulder pads, so I say keep it in the 80's.

Oh no, I was asking if the *actors* would still be the same age as they were when they were in the 80s, since this is, y'know, an "alternate dimension" we're talking about. XD

I've seen a couple, but after thinking it over, Dynasty as an HBO series probably wouldn't work. Though I don't know what "je ne sais quoi" means, lol.

In that case, yes. Both actors and characters the same age.
Neither do I, but that's why they call it a "je ne sais quoi".

I like it in the '80s. But then I love most '80s things, politics aside.

Dynasty needs to be set in the 80s. Still having said that I would love to see a new pre-quel show focusing on a young Blake & Alexis set in the 1950s/1960s.

Alright, what if it were a period show like Mad Men, where its filmed today but set in the 80s? But yes, I also like the idea of there being a prequel about Blake and Alexis. I'd love watching them meet, fall in love, and then see their marriage deteriorate... they were married for 7 or 8 years, right? Plenty of time to create a whole series on. :D

I totally agree. So much of Dynasty's history was based on the unseen Alexis & Blake years. So I guess as long as they get the casting for young Alexis and young Blake right a show like that could be totally awesome. :)

Not so sure a prequel would have been all that great. Part of the appeal of the DALLAS and DYNASTY backstories was that one was never absolutely sure who was right and who was wrong. Maybe it was both. The ambiguity and mystery worked perfectly. A prequel attempts to explain away that fascinating mystery and, when shows become too literal about the past, it often serves to undermine the power that backstory has.

I think the only decades Dynasty could've been made in besides the 80s, has to be the 60s or the 00s, simply because of the vast social and political changes that went on during those eras, in the 60s you could've had Steven go to Vietnam in the 00s he could've gone to Iraq or Afghanistan, it would be interesting to see the Carringtons deal with 9/11 or Kennedy's assailant ion plus the fact that like the 80s the 60s and the 00s were rather hedonistic and glamorous.

Btw thanks to the recent updates to this site I can no longer log in as DynastyTreeNat89 so I had to start all over again (sad to see threads I had read and written gone :( ) so I'm now StrangerDynastyTreeNat89

Were the 00s hedonistic and glamorous? I wouldn't know, since I was still a kid with no income, not to mention no social life. lol But yeah, those eras you speak of do sound suitable for Dynasty. Say, what about the 20s? That could also work... oh wait, we already have Downton Abbey, so no need for that. XD

Yeah, it is sad, but hey, think of it as a fresh clean start. Like a big white piece of paper to make new drawings on. :D But welcome back, dude!

I would love seeing a prequel to "Dynasty" with Al Corley´s Steven in "The Formative Years". Of course, I´m talking about a miniseries about Steven in New York in the 70´s, produced by Showtime (or maybe Starz...). I can see it now...And it could even look a bit like "Boys in the Band" or "Crusing". James Franco would direct, and Ted Dinard would guest-star...and even Bruce Jenner might do a cameo, in a transgender-back crossover from the alternate universe...if you know what I mean...

And yet it doesn't really feel 80s to me, but that applies to most American tv shows from that era. The only thing that would qualify it as typical 80s is the more "aggresive" attitude of women in charge (like Thatcher).

Dynasty was made in the 80s obviously but like what Willie Oleson said, it never felt 80s, season 1 is like a novel From the 1920s, season 4 plays off like a 1940s film noir and season 6 was a throwback to melodramas of the late 1950s-1960s.

Dynasty never felt like the 80s until mid-late season 7 for me and it looks terribly dated by that point.

Wow, I had never thought about it that way, but you're absolutely right.
I think aesthetic-wise, the late-80s was the worst of the worst, and eventhough I love season 9, that quintessential "fantasty" thing was no longer there.
Although I must say that Falcon Crest suffered much more from this, and earlier too.

    2017 I think (unless it is 2016)
But DYNASTY had lost that some time ago. I think maybe season 6, for all its flaws, was the last one where DYNASTY was escapism. After that it was mired in its unrealistic brand of realism.
